Piron Morgon La Chanaise 2015

Descriptions:

Dominique Piron’s family history in Beaujolais spans more than four centuries, with his oldest known ancestor born in Morgon in 1590. There have been 14 generations of winegrowers in the family and he is known as “The Dom Piron of Morgon”.

The Morgon cru is located on the hills of Villié Morgon in the northern Beaujolais region. The climate is continental and the small plots from which this wine comes have a southeast exposure overlooking the valley of the Saône.

VINEYARDS These vines are more than 50 years old and grow on the foundation of “rotten rock” rich in iron oxide, and schists.

Dominique Piron Chenas Quartz 2014

Descriptions:

Appellation: Chénas is the smallest and rarest of the Beaujolais Crus. This comes from a vineyard that Piron runs with the three Michelin-starred Lameloise restaurant in Chagny.

The soil is granite based clay with bands of quartz crystals running through it. This is where the wine gets its name, as the quartz imparts a mineral quality to the wine which makes it very expressive without being heavy.

The nine- hectare parcel comprises vines of more than 60 years of age on a steep, east-facing slope between 310 and 380 metres up. They are all pruned in the traditional goblet (head-pruned) style of Beaujolais. The harvest is done entirely by hand. Only manual harvesting is allowed in the Beaujolais region.

A full-on nose of spice, earth and prettiness is mirrored on a palate that seems to bring together notes of lilac and peony before unveiling mature tannins. Supple, generous and vibrant, with graphite and deeply scented red fruits. A real stunner. Pairs well with rich, complex sauces and grilled meats.

Brouilly [broo-EE] goes marvelously with roasted or grilled chicken, fish, burgers, or pork. Pairs nicely with Camembert & Brie cheeses.
